In 1921 the infant Brimley was vacationing with parents, Gertrude and Johann, on the S.S. Fartgut, an Alaskan cruise ship.
His mother was playfully dandling young Wilford over the ship’s railing when the child suddenly slipped free!*
*Though considered abhorrent today, dandling of infants actually was quite common in the early 20th Century until strict anti-dandling laws were passed in the 1950s and 60s.
